Origins of Wreaths



Why are wreaths use in our homes?
The tradition of hanging a wreath in the home goes back to antiquity. Florals and leaf arrangements were used not only as composed arrangements but were used as decorative features in architecture. This ornamentation was applied to stone bronze and painted surfaces by the Greeks. The Romans who were always hasting in their design applications used stucco or plaster in a relief style. The earliest known used of wreaths in Ancient Greece and Rome were symbols of victory and status. Laurel wreaths were awarded to athletes who won competitions in Olympic Games. The Romans used wreaths as mark of victory in military and civic ceremonies and victors wore as symbols of their achievements in battle.
In pre-Christian Europe wreaths were used in ceremonies to celebrate times of year such as the winter solstice. It was symbolic of the continuity of life and these wreaths were typically created from evergreen plains and in a circle repressing the circle of life.

In the Christian faith the Advent wreath was used to fit in with religious practices. The holiday wreath originated in Germany in the 16th century and was made of evergreen branches, 4 candles each representing one of the four weeks leading up to Christmas. A candle was lit each week in anticipation and preparation of the birth of Christ.

During Renaissance wreaths became a popular motif in art and decoration. In the Victorian era wreaths began to take on new meaning and uses.
Victorians were known for their elaborate floral arrangements and decoration. Interestingly the Victorians also used wreaths in black and white to symbolize mourning and remembrance but on more joyous occasions and made with vibrant florals.

Today we used wreath for a variety of celebrations around the world from Christmas to Easter to weddings and national holidays. Wreaths today are used to decorate homes, public spaces and ceremonial venues. The modern application of wreaths still retain elements of the ancient origins and add contemporary designs and materials.

Wreaths go beyond their traditional uses today and have become part of the decorating process. We see wreaths no longer confined to the front door and only used for holidays.
